The Pacific - an Ocean in Danger
The Pacific Ocean covers 30 per cent of the earth´s surface. It is
almost twice the size of the Atlantic Ocean and you can find the
deepest places on earth there. Although the name "Pacific" means
peaceful, this ocean is in great danger since there is a very large
area of plastic waste
threatening it. Plastic bottles have been part of our
lives for a long time.
In 1978, Coca-Cola
introduced the 2-liter PET plastic bottle and in
2016, over 480 billion plastic bottles
were sold worldwide.
It contributes to the
pollution of our planet. However, plastic has a lot
of advantages: it is much lighter
than glass, does not break easily
and its transport and
production are much cheaper. Besides, recycled
plastic is often turned into
various items, such as fleece pullover or
carpets.
But people who
carelessly throw plastic waste away may eat that same
plastic one day. It can be eaten by fish and as everyone
knows, we
humans are at the top of the food chain.
The UN predicts that if trends continue, by 2050 oceans
will / might / could / may contain more plastic than fish by weight.
