|Australia is an independent democracy with a population of more than|
22 million. It is one of the world´s most urbanised countries, with
about 70 percent of the population living in the ten largest cities.
Australia is also a multiculutral society with people from almost
200 nations. Australian English does not differ significantly from other
forms of English, although some colloquial slang expressions are
Australia´s national day, which is celebrated on 26 January, marks
the date in 1788 when Capitain Arthur Philip sailed into Port
Jackson. This day is called "Australia Day".
One of the earliest export goods was wool. Since then a more
diverse export industrie has developped.
Tourism and education, as well as producing an selling high quality
food and wine are also important for Australian economy.
