Polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba
The Canadian town Churchill is a town where it would be better to
look right, left and right again - though it is not a speeding car that
might hit you, but a hungry polar bear.
No roads lead to churchill - it is so cut
off that you have to
rach it by rail or plane, but the bears have no trouble finding it every
year. Churchill, on the western coast of the Hudson Bay
is called
"polas bear capital of the world". It has more polar bears
passing
through it in October and November than it has people. As many as
20 a day can be seen around the town. After months of eating little
more than berries and seaweed the bears are starting to get hungry.
What they
strongly want is to find a frozen spot along the coastline
where they can risk to go back on the ice and hunt seals. But many
smell the town and do not want to miss the opportunity to look for
a meal.
Life / Living with polar bears is getting riskier for both humans and
bears in a future influenced by climate change. Until now the loss of
sea ice
has caused a rapid drop in the bear population around Hud-
son bay.
Scientists say the starving bears are showing more and more risky
and atypical
behaviour(s) / behavior(s) such as cannibalism and are wandernig far
inland where they come closer to the people.
